“To select, develop and graduate area High School Juniors who recognize and comprehend community challenges and foster leadership qualities and skills.”
The program is a leadership development program designed to encourage, equip, and empower young people for successful community leadership.
- Identify and select highly motivated high school juniors from the four area high schools to participate in the class.
- Systematically challenge the students to become aware of, to examine and to respond to the social and economic needs of their community.
- Create a dialogue and sense of teamwork among the students and their community leaders.
- Build the student’s leadership skills through the course of the program to take back to practice in their individual high schools.
Junior Leadership Oconee is only open to high school juniors from the four area high schools – Seneca, Tamassee-Salem, Walhalla and West-Oak.
The five classes are held in January, February, March, April and May. Attendance is mandatory for all five classes. Students will be excused from school for the five classes held from 7:30 – 3:00, but will be required to make-up any missed class work.
Students interested in applying should see their Guidance Counselor. Applications are taken the month of October. Students will be notified by December if they have been accepted into the class. A parent permission form, parent signature and the recommendation of the student’s Principal is required before acceptance into the class.
Food and transportation is provided to the class participants during the class day. Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from the class.
